HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) is the ocean component of the HAFS IOC, where the sea surface temperature (SST) is configured as the only ocean feedback variable. A study of coupling experiments using HWRF demonstrated that including sea surface current (SSC) as additional ocean feedback improves Vmax intensity skill by O(27%) and O(30%) in 2-way and 3-way coupling respectively, and also tracks skill for 3-way coupling (except 2-way coupling). This talk presents current and future plans for coupling and data assimilation.
